Sharafutdinova made the announcement on Instagram, writing:

Beyond excited to share that I’m continuing my academic and athletic journey at The Ohio State University! I’m incredibly thankful for the support from my family, coaches, and teammates throughout this process — I truly couldn’t have done it without you all.

Huge thanks to the coaching staff at Ohio State for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Ready for what’s next — Go Bucks!

The 20-year-old is a backstroke specialist and has represented her home nation at multiple high-level international competitions, most notably the 2023 World Junior Championships, the 2024 Olympics, and the 2024 Short Course World Championships.

At the 2023 World Juniors, held in Netanya, Israel, Sharafutdinova made the final of the 50 back, where she ultimately touched 7th in a time of 28.80. She also competed in the two other backstroke distances, hitting the wall 17th in the 100 (1:02.98) before notching 2:19.09 en route to 22nd in the 200.

At the Paris Olympics, Sharafutdinova finished 22nd in the 100 back, clocking 1:01.47.

Competing at the Short Course Worlds this past December, Sharafutdinova’s best placement once again came in the one-lap sprint. She produced a time of 27.91 for 33rd in the event before nearly matching that finish with a 34th showing in the 200 back (2:14.86). She kicked off her individual campaign in the 100, where she was 40th in 1:00.79.

Sharafutdinova’s time in the 50 back represented her first time venturing into sub-28 territory, while her career best times of 1:00.70 and 2:10.35 in the longer races stem back to November 2022.

Most recently, she competed at the European U23 Championships in Slovakia this past June. She made the final in the 50 back, turning in a result of 28.68, while she was 11th in the 100 (1:01.89) and 20th in the 200 (2:16.41).

Sharafutdinova’s lifetime bests in the long course pool date back to 2023 and 2024, with her 50 back mark of 28.57 set at the Hungarian Championships in April 2023 while her 100 (1:00.91) and 200 (2:11.88) were logged at the 2024 European Championships.

Ohio State won the 2025 Women’s Big Ten Championships after finishing second behind Indiana in 2024. At the NCAA Championships, the Buckeyes placed 14th, just 9.5 points behind 13th-place Miami (Florida).

Sharafutdinova’s best time in the 100 back from long course converts to 53.82 in the SCY pool, while her 200 back clocking converts to 1:56.64. Neither of those times would make the top 16 at the conference level or qualify for the NCAA Championships.

It’s important to note that converted times are not 100% accurate and should be viewed as approximations. Still, they help provide some perspective on how Sharafutdinova’s performances could translate into the shorter pool. Swimmers with similar times to her in the long course pool have been as quick as 49-high to 51-low, which would not only make an ‘A’ final at Big Tens but also challenge for the win. A time in that range would also easily qualify for the NCAA Championships, where it consistently takes 50-high to make the ‘A’ final.
