DENVER (KDVR) — Video obtained by FOX31 shows that the rail safety arms for the crossing near Smith and Sable may not have been engaged before a semitrailer crossed the railway and was hit by the train.
The video shows the moments when a commuter rail train and a semitrailer collided at about 9:20 a.m. on Monday. The Regional Transportation District's A Line commuter rail had collided with the semitrailer as the truck crossed the railroad near the intersection of Smith Road and Sable Boulevard.
Multi-vehicle crash snarls traffic on U.S. 36 eastbound Friday afternoon: CSPIn the moments leading to the crash, it appears that the rail safety arm had not been deployed and only fell into place after the train and truck collided.
There were 55 people on board the train at the time of the crash, and two people suffered minor injuries. The train's driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
An Aurora Police Department spokesperson told FOX31 on Monday that the semitrailer had been making a left turn onto Smith Road from Sable Boulevard when the back of the trailer was struck by the train. The train was headed to the Denver International Airport at the time of the crash.
An Aurora police spokesperson noted that one of the crossing arms had been ripped off its base and was sitting under the semitruck after the crash.

Things like that, to determine who might be at fault," said the Aurora police spokesperson.
There is also a possibility that the semitrailer's location at the intersection prevented the rail safety bars from properly lowering when prompted.
Man threatened deputies during 13-hour standoff spurred by eviction: sheriffThe area is largely industrial and residents in the neighborhood to the southwest of the crash location told FOX31's Greg Nieto on Friday that the intersection has long been dangerous.
