As the new Championship season gets started this evening, a brand new rule will be enforced for the first time.
Typically, in the EFL, team news has been released by clubs exactly 60 minutes before kick-off in every game.
There is a new rule being implemented in the EFL this seasonGettyAnticipation is always built an hour ahead of each fixture, as fans await how their team will be lining up.
But things have now been switched up for the 2025/26 season.
Instead of team news being released 60 minutes before kick-off, it will now be revealed to the public 75 minutes beforehand.
This is the same change that was made in the Premier League last summer, with the EFL now adopting the earlier line-up release.
It means that for a 3pm kick-off, teams will be revealed at 1:45pm.
For 12:30pm starts, line-ups will now come out at 11:15am, for 7:45pm starts, the new rule means it will be a 6:30pm reveal and it will now be an 18:45pm announcement for 8pm kick-offs.
League One and League Two began their new campaign last weekend and all teams used this new rule for the first time.
And it’s the Championship’s turn next, with some fans potentially being caught out by the 15-minute change to the rules.
The first game that will use the new team news rule will be the season opener between Birmingham City and Ipswich Town, which will be exclusively live on talkSPORT tonight.
Kick-off at St. Andrews is set for 8pm, meaning Birmingham and Ipswich will reveal their line-ups at 6:45pm.
Birmingham and Ipswich’s line-ups will be announced earlier than usualGettyWhy is team news being announced earlier?
The EFL has followed the Premier League‘s decision last summer to move team releases 15 minutes earlier than usual.
A change was made in the top-flight ahead of the 2024/25 season to fall more in line with European competitions.
In Europe, teams also abide by the rule of lineups being announced 75 minutes before kick-off in all of their fixtures.
Due to the Premier League’s change, it’s likely that the EFL have now moved to match that for similar reasons.
The top-flight, Championship, League One and League Two clubs will all now be following the same rules.
On top of that, some fans can be impatient and want to find out their teams as soon as possible, so the change aids supporters too.
