Can Harmanpreet Kaur’s Team India win Women’s T20 World Cup 2026? ...Middle East

Team India created history when their lifted their first ever World Cup in November this year. That after losing a few matches along the way; the team showed extreme composure when the odds were heavily stacked against them. Jemimah Rodrigues played one of the best innings in women’s ODIs ever, to take India over the line against Australia in the semis, while it was replacement Shafali Verma who delivered in the final, with the bat & the ball vs South Africa.

A very young bowling pair of Kranti Gaud and Shree Charani rose to the occasion multiple times. Batting was excellent with Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal and even Richa Ghosh. But what happened in the 50-over World Cup, could still be difficult to replicate in the T20Is.

Well, for starters, the nature of the format is such; any team can be beaten on any given day. Yes, India has just beaten Sri Lanka in the five-match series 5-0, but that doesn’t say much. The quality of the opposition wasn’t the greatest, and the Indian team too lacked in a certain areas.

Where are the wicket-taking options

It just appears, only statistically, that the Indian bowlers, though excellent, aren’t the biggest wicket-takers. It would be safe to call them defensive bowlers, who are great with curtailing runs. In the gone SL series, they did not take 10 wickets even once; that when the SL batting by no stretch of imagination is strong. In the first match, we picked up six wickets, in the second it was nine, in third it was seven, fourth six, and in the last it was seven again.

Deepti Sharma and Vaishnavi Sharma were the highest wicket-takers with 5 scalps each. Shree Charani had 5 too. Returns were scanty in pacer department with Renuka Thakur picking 4, Arundhati Reddy 3, and Amanjot Kaur only 1.

Missing leg-spinner

Somehow, after Punam Yadav, India hasn’t found a regular leg-spinner. Priya Mishra was tried out last year and picked up 15 wickets in 9 matches, but didn’t get a longer rope. Then there was Asha Sobhana, who picked up 9 in 6 matches, got injured and did not comeback. There is just too much of left-arm spinners in the side.

Catching/fielding still needs improvement

Over the last few months, even though the fielding standards have drastically improved, but there are teams who do better than us. During the World Cup, the first three matches saw 9-10 dropped chances. Here, vs Lanka, it was same number in 5 matches. Yes, some were difficult chances, but most of them were sitters. That is bread and butter for any top side.

Belief vs top sides

Despite these things missing, India can still lift the T20 World Cup. Only belief is needed. If they did it in the 50-overs World Cup, there is no reason why they can’t repeat their feat. But they can’t get bogged down while playing against teams like Australia, England and South Africa. They don’t even boast of a great record against them; but at the end of the day, it is a very capable unit that wants to win.
