Brighton’s Briar Manor residents adapt to week without hot water ...Middle East

BRIGHTON, N.Y. – Residents of Briar Manor Apartments have been without hot water for more than a week due to broken gas pipes. Despite promises of restoration Thursday, residents say hot water has not yet returned.

Kevin Phillips said he has been going to his mother-in-law’s house to do laundry, which takes twice as long as usual.

“But for most of these people they are going to places they have to pay to get their laundry done, laundromats,” said Phillips. “I don’t know what they’re doing for showers.”

Ralph Schiano expressed frustration over having to travel to a local YMCA to shower. “What do you do, you’ve gotta get in your car and drive ten miles to take a shower,” said Schiano. “It’s frustrating, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve turned on my hot water praying there was some water and all I get is cold.”

Teresa Ellison said she has resorted to boiling water to wash dishes. “It’s very inconvenient, you know, boiling water when you have to take a wash,” said Ellison. “Boiling water to wash our utensils and stuff, it’s just really inconvenient.”

Despite the inconvenience, most residents expressed satisfaction with how Briar Manor has handled the situation. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said this is the first time such an issue has occurred in their ten years living there.

Briar Manor released a statement saying they have been working diligently to replace damaged equipment and restore service safely, coordinating with RG&E throughout the process. They say crews have been working full days and overtime.

Ryan Doyle, Property Manager for Briar Manor Apartments, said, “The comfort and safety of our residents is our top priority. If there was any way we could get service returned faster, we would do it.”

RG&E stated that the safety of all gas users is their top priority. They are ready to restore service once repairs to the apartment complex are complete.
