Humanitarian Aid Convoys Resume Entry into Suwayda after Security Tensions ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Humanitarian aid convoys resumed entry into Syria’s southern Suwayda province through the Busra al-Sham humanitarian corridor in Daraa countryside on Wednesday, August 6, after a halt caused by recent security unrest in the area.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported the arrival of a relief convoy comprising 20 trucks from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center project, in addition to 29 trucks delivered by a joint United Nations and Red Cross mission, coordinated with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).

The aid shipment included food items, flour, and vegetables, marking the first convoy to reach Suwayda since recent clashes between local factions and tribal fighters backed by Syrian internal security forces.

The Busra al-Sham corridor was reopened on Monday, August 4, after a 24-hour closure due to security concerns, according to the Suwayda governorate.

The Daraa correspondent confirmed the return of calm to the western countryside of Suwayda, with no reported ceasefire violations since.

Clashes had reignited on August 3 between Syria’s internal security forces and tribal fighters on one side, and local Suwayda factions on the other, in the vicinity of Tel al-Hadid near the town of al-Thaala in Suwayda’s western countryside.

The last convoy to enter Suwayda before the closure was a joint humanitarian mission delivered by various UN agencies, which included 40 trucks carrying food aid, medical supplies, fuel, hygiene items, shelter materials, and equipment for supporting health facilities, bakeries, and critical infrastructure in the province.

On August 5, Syria’s Civil Defense Department under the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management announced the individual evacuation of 196 families (totaling 884 individuals, including women and children) from Suwayda through the Busra al-Sham corridor.

The Civil Defense teams provided assistance and ensured the families’ safe arrival at their destinations. Meanwhile, a Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy evacuated 350 people (about 85 families) from Suwayda via the same humanitarian corridor.

Simultaneously, 124 families (519 returnees) re-entered Suwayda through the Busra al-Sham crossing.

The British government announced that it will provide humanitarian aid to more than 85,000 Syrians affected by the recent events in southern Suwayda.

In a statement sent to Enab Baladi on Tuesday, August 5, the British government said the aid package includes medical and humanitarian relief for displaced families and will be distributed across Suwayda, Daraa, and Rural Damascus.

The aid package includes the deployment of mobile medical teams to provide urgent healthcare services to displaced individuals, delivery of medications and trauma care supplies to health facilities, and essential support for pregnant women and new mothers. It will also provide food assistance, clean water, and sanitation and hygiene services.
