BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Brockport is preparing to host its annual arts festival in four days, but the Main Street Bridge remains closed. The village was initially told the bridge would be open in time for the festival, but now the completion date has been pushed to the end of the month.
The festival organizers announced that events planned for the north side of the bridge will be moved to the south side. Business owners on the north side expressed their frustration over the delays.
“When they came out to do the festival, my one of my first questions was ‘are we banking on the bridge being open’ with all the drawbacks that we’ve had,” said Marc Marcello, owner of 58 Main BBQ & Brew. “Now I’m nervous about, you know, when is it going to be open?”
Andrew Dangelo, owner of Bloom & Blend, opened his business in May with the expectation that the bridge would open in June. “Yeah, we opened up with the thought that it was going to open in June, and then it just kept getting delayed and delayed and delayed,” said Dangelo.
Residents are also feeling the impact of the bridge closure. Fred Richards, a Brockport resident for 35 years, said, “You got to make a detour and go around, and it’s a thinner bridge, and you got to watch for cars coming the other way. And it, it takes a lot longer.”
The Department of Transportation released the following statement today:
The New York State Department of Transportation is working to address unforeseen mechanical issues that arose during equipment tests on the Albion and Brockport lift bridges and expects to have the matter resolved in the coming weeks. The safety of the traveling public is always NYSDOT’s top priority and we appreciate the community’s patience as we work to complete the final stages of this important project to rehabilitate these historic bridges. The Department will keep the public informed of further developments.
The arts festival will proceed this weekend, and while businesses like Marcello’s and Dangelo’s won’t be accessible on foot, they encourage people to drive over and visit.
