Unknown assailants carried out three separate attacks today, Tuesday, August 5, targeting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in both western and eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
A source in the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), who requested anonymity for security reasons, told Enab Baladi that SDF military units were placed on high alert following the attacks, setting up checkpoints across several areas amid heightened security measures.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Deir Ezzor reported that one of the attacks targeted a vehicle carrying SDF fighters in the town of Abriha, eastern Deir Ezzor, killing two fighters and injuring three others, who were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
In the western countryside, unknown gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on an SDF fighter in the town of al-Hissan, injuring him.
A third attack targeted a diesel tanker belonging to the SDF in the Jazrat area near the town of al-Kibar in western Deir Ezzor. No details were available regarding human or material losses, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.
Attacks Claimed by ISIS
The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for attacking an SDF 4×4 vehicle in the village of Hawij Boumasaa in western Deir Ezzor on Monday, August 4, using automatic weapons. At least one fighter was wounded, according to the group.
The organization also announced that its fighters had attacked an SDF checkpoint near the town of al-Hawaij on July 31, also using automatic weapons.
According to Enab Baladi’s monitoring of a Telegram group affiliated with ISIS, the July 31 attack resulted in five SDF fighters killed or wounded.
On July 25, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the death of one of its members and the injury of another in an ISIS attack in Deir Ezzor’s countryside.
In a statement released at the time, the SDF said an ISIS cell had targeted one of its military vehicles in the village of al-Zar in the al-Busayrah region, in eastern Deir Ezzor.
The cell had been hiding in the area, and clashes broke out between its members and SDF fighters. The militants managed to escape, prompting a search and sweep operation by the SDF.
In a separate incident on the same day, another ISIS cell attacked an SDF military post in the town of Dhiban, eastern Deir Ezzor, injuring several fighters. The cell also escaped, and no SDF casualties were officially confirmed.
A third cell attacked an SDF checkpoint located between the towns of al-Shuhail and al-Busayrah, also on the same day.
The SDF stated that ISIS is exploiting the current state of chaos in Syria to regroup and revive its “terrorist” operations by targeting its forces, civilians, and public infrastructure.
The group affirmed that its security and military operations are ongoing on multiple fronts and vowed not to allow ISIS to carry out its “destructive and evil” agenda in areas under its control.
