A man was shot and killed in possible retaliation for a mass shooting that occurred at a house party in south suburban Harvey, authorities said.

At approximately 4:50 a.m., officers with the Harvey Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near Calumet Boulevard and Sangamon Street, a spokesperson for the city of Harvey stated. Officers arrived on the scene and found a man inside a minivan who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Preliminary information indicates the shooting may have been in retaliation for a shooting on Saturday night that injured seven people and left one of the suspects dead. After 8 p.m., two individuals opened fire on a group at a home blocks away along Des Plaines Street near Calumet Boulevard.

A partygoer, who has a concealed carry license, returned fire, striking and killing one of the suspects, police said. A second suspect was also hospitalized, and was taken into custody by police.

Investigators were following leads in the subsequent shooting, and witnesses were cooperating with officers, authorities stated.
