Bears Training Camp Notes: Defensive Masterclass, Monangai Involvement, More ...Middle East

The Chicago Bears’ training camp resumes, this time at Soldier Field for Family Fest.

Defense Puts on a Performance at Training Camp

If you’ve been following the Bears’ side of the internet like I have today (and every day), you’ve seen Dennis Allen and his defense put on a clinic at Soldier Field with plenty of highlights. During a series where the first team offense faced off against the second team defense, the Bears offense recorded (via Brad Biggs):

2 delay of games 1 handoff 2 QB scrambles 2 completions 3 incompletions 1 sack

From an offensive perspective, this drive is concerning, as it didn’t go well at all. However, from a logical standpoint, this offense is still learning and adjusting to the playbook, and it will take time for Caleb to fully understand every component of it. The competitiveness from this defense will drive Caleb to make better decisions once this new scheme is fully understood. I’m not too worried just yet.

The Dennis Allen-led defense stuffs D’Andre Swift at the one-yard line to record a safety.

Monangai’s Production and Some Good From the Offense

Today’s practice wasn’t all defense; there were some bright spots for the offense, particularly Kyle Monangai. The Rutgers alum made his way into the endzone twice in today’s practice, once for the third team offense and again for the first team offense:

Given Monangai’s elevated involvement and performance in today’s practice, I’m starting to think he might carve out a serious role in this backfield. It also seems like the competition for the RB2 position might be tighter than we initially anticipated.

At today’s meeting at Soldier Field, the consensus opinion was ‘it just wasn’t the offense’s day’ and I can certainly agree with that opinion. There was an array of mental errors, poor judgment, and just overall silly mistakes. Towards the end of the practice, it became less sloppy and more like what we’ve seen in these past few days of training camp.
