So much for that Cubs smoke – or maybe it was just being sent up into the air to drive this outcome for the Guardians.
Shane Bieber is close to being dealt to the Blue Jays, per Jon Morosi. Jeff Passan says the deal is being “finalized.”
I don’t doubt the Cubs were in on Bieber, but if they were holding out for one of the controllable starters, then maybe the Guardians decided to stop waiting on them.
We’ll see what the final accounting is here if and when the deal is completed.
UPDATE: The reported return, via Jon Morosi, will be Blue Jays pitching prospect Khal Stephen, who was their second rounder last year. MLB Pipeline ranks him 5th in their farm system, but outside the top-100. FanGraphs, however, had just ranked him 80th in baseball. The 22-year-old absolutely carved up High-A in his pro debut this year, and has already been promoted to Double-A.
I don’t have a perfect parallel in the Cubs’ system, but this is pretty close to Jaxon Wiggins if you had to pick someone. And let me tell you, NOOOOOO way would I want the Cubs to give up Wiggins for two months of Bieber coming off of surgery (plus a $4 million bill after the season if he passes on his $16 million player option for 2026 (which, by the way, you’d also be on the hook for if he gets hurt or stinks)).
