There were some major surprises in store in the day 3 finals session, some of which nobody predicted.

Two shocks came in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Of 504 entries, nobody chose Anna Elendt to walk away with the gold or Satomi Suzuki to finish in the top-four.

Three people chose Elendt to take 2nd, five people predicted her 3rd, and 28 people predicted her to finish 4th.

Nobody chose Suzuki anywhere in the 100 breast, but 35 people chose her to finish in the top four of the 200 breaststroke, which is later this week. She seems to be having a good week so far, so those of you who chose her could earn a leg up in the coming days.

The other major shock came from the men’s 200 freestyle where Tatsuya Murasa finished 3rd overall, and nobody picked him to be top-four at all. This was his only event at these World Championships, but he made it count by throwing a wrench in the pick’ems. Not to fear, though, 380 entries correctly selected David Popovici to walk home with the gold.

Not quite on the same level, but still shocking, only 12 people predicted South Africa’s Pieter Coetze to win the men’s 100 backstroke. Most of the picks went to the World Record Holder Thomas Ceccon, who finished 2nd, or Kliment Kolesnikov, who was 6th.

There were some expected results as well. Katie Ledecky won the 1500 freestyle, which 499 of 504 people predicted. In fact, the only people who didn’t predict a Ledecky victory did not finish filling out their pick’ems and left the spot completely blank.

Kaylee McKeown won the women’s 100 backstroke, which was one of two primary predictions. 259 people chose McKeown to take the gold and 235 people chose Regan Smith.

SwimSwam staff also made an entry based solely on the psych sheet called “SwimSwam Top Three Seeds”, where we chose the top four seeds in every event to help entrants see how they are performing compared to the seeds. That entry is currently in 302nd with 100 points over the last three days.
