9-year-old child dies after incident at Hersheypark's water park in Pennsylvania

In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate WGAL, a family spokesperson identified the girl as 9-year-old Sophia Subedi. According to the spokesperson, Subedi was born in Columbus, Ohio, but lived in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, since 2022. She attended North Side Elementary School in the Central Dauphin School District and was set to start 4th grade during the upcoming school year, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson described Subedi as a “bright, kind, and loving young girl,” who “brought joy and light to everyone who knew her.”

A GoFundMe was created in support of Subedi’s family. The family spokesperson said a funeral service for Subedi is expected to take place at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

Subedi died at the wave pool at the Boardwalk at Hersheypark on Thursday, July 24, the theme park confirmed with WGAL. A Hersheypark spokesperson said there were 100 lifeguards – trained and certified through Ellis & Associates (E&A) — at the Boardwalk at the time of the incident. They also said there were 10 lifeguards specifically dedicated to the wave pool at the time.

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company CEO John Lawn said that the lifeguards, first responders and medics performed life-saving efforts on Subedi when they saw she was in distress.

A witness told WGAL the girl was limp as she was pulled from the wave pool and a lifeguard performed CPR on her as the Hersheypark staff tried to shield onlookers from the traumatic incident. She was taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Officials have not revealed a cause of death.

“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family,” Lawn wrote. “We extend our deepest condolences for their loss. Out of respect for their privacy, we will not release any personal details at this time.”

Lawn wrote in his statement that the safety of Hersheypark’s guests was the theme park’s “highest priority.” He also said Hersheypark would conduct a “thorough internal review and cooperate fully with authorities.”

The wave pool at the Boardwalk was closed on Friday, a day after Subedi’s death.

Hersheypark was founded in 1906. It’s located about 95 miles west of Philadelphia and 15 miles east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Spanning 121 acres, Hersheypark is the most-visited theme park in Pennsylvania, the ninth-most-visited theme park in North America and the largest theme park in the United States outside of Ohio, Florida and California, according to the Global Attractions Attendance Report.
