Suwayda Syndicates Cut Ties with Damascus ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Several professional and civil unions in Syria’s southern Suwayda province have announced they are cutting ties with their central branches in Damascus, in protest at what they described as the central government’s silence over the recent violence and human rights violations in the province.

The first move came on the evening of Saturday, 26 July, when the Agricultural Engineers’ Syndicate in Suwayda issued a statement mourning four of its members—engineers Anis Nasser, Adnan al-Aws, Raja al-Abd, and Riyad Duwai’ar—who were killed during the recent unrest.

In the same statement, the syndicate announced that it would suspend all communication with the central union in Damascus “until the current regime is replaced by an authority that represents the Syrian people and protects their dignity.”

The Suwayda branch of the Engineers’ Syndicate also published a separate statement calling on Syrians to stand by the people of Suwayda and “not remain silent in the face of spilled blood and lost lives.” However, it did not clarify whether it too would suspend contact with its parent union.

Other unions quickly followed suit. The Teachers’ Syndicate in Suwayda declared its “independence from the central authority” and accused Damascus of being “complicit in the bloodshed.” The syndicate emphasized that students in the province were unable to sit for their high school exams this year, despite the efforts of teachers who had worked under extreme conditions to fulfill their educational duties.

The Suwayda branch of the Pharmacists’ Syndicate also blamed the Syrian government for “denying patients access to medication,” announcing that it had severed ties with the Damascus-based central body, which it accused of being “aligned with the regime.”

The Workers’ Syndicate and the Veterinary Doctors’ Syndicate in Suwayda also joined the protest, each announcing the suspension of all contact with their respective national unions.

In a notable escalation, the Suwayda branch of the Bar Association submitted a collective resignation in protest of the “violations committed against civilians” in the province.

These developments come amid escalating tensions in Suwayda following violent clashes between local factions, Bedouin tribes, and government security forces. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), at least 814 people have been killed since the outbreak of violence on 12 July, including 34 women, 20 children, six medical workers, and two media personnel. The organization also documented more than 903 injuries.

The ongoing violence has worsened humanitarian conditions in Suwayda, where severe shortages of food and essential services have fueled public outrage. The rising anger has sparked an unprecedented wave of union-led civil disobedience in the Druze-majority province.
