Tonight we got our first World Championships look at Australian Olympian Sam Short.

The 21-year-old raced his way to a silver medal in the men’s 400m freestyle, with his time of 3:42.37 falling just .02 shy of winner Lukas Märten‘s (GER) gold medal-worthy 3:42.35. South Korea was also right in the mix, with Kim Woomin securing bronze in 3:42.60.

Originally, Short was entered in the 800m free and 1500m free but, speaking to World Aquatics post-race tonight, the Aussie confirmed he has dropped the longer distance.

“I’m super keen for the 800m, I love that event, hopefully the 4x200m as well. I gave up my individual spot for the 200m [prior to this meet] and then the 1500m at the end. It’s a bit of a bonus, not really targeting that too much, just in there for a bit of digs on how hard I can hurt myself. But I’m really excited for the 800m, it’s a really good field as well.”

Heats of the men’s 800m free begin tomorrow, Monday, July 28th, while the 1500m heats are scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd.

Short took home the 1500m bronze at the 2024 World Championships before a disappointing showing at the Olympic Games.

A stomach illness at the Australian Trials derailed his preparations for Paris, and he failed to medal in any event, and missed the final in both the 800 and 1500.

However, he opened this season with a 1500m victory at the Pro Swim Series in Sacramento (15:03.87).

In June at the Australian Trials, Short won the event in 14:52.43, nearly six seconds faster than his 13th-place time in Paris. While a far cry from his PB of 14:37.28, the swim was a positive sign for the Australian and put him in the conversation to at least make the final at these Championships.
