DENVER (KDVR) — A Boulder County Sheriff's Office deputy is being credited with saving lives after stopping a wrong-way driver who was speeding on U.S. Highway 36 at night.
At about 5:10 a.m. on May 25, Sgt. Sharon McKim saw a driver traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 36. When first spotted, the suspect was driving at about 75 mph, according to dashcam footage. McKim can be heard on her cruiser's dashboard camera asking for someone to try and intercept the vehicle.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stops over 100 people with speeding patrol teamMcKim was traveling in the same direction as the suspect, but in the correct lanes for that direction. A concrete median separated her cruiser from the suspect.
McKim kept the wrong-way driver in sight and followed them. The driver reportedly hit speeds of 110 mph at times, and several cars were forced to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.
"Thanks to her (McKim's) quick response, no one was hurt," the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said.
In Boulder, Highway 36 transitions to 28th Street, a surface road. At the intersection with Colorado Avenue, the driver pulled over to the correct side of the roadway and stopped.
The driver was arrested and faces charges of driving under the influence, drug possession and multiple traffic violations.
