Head of Civil Defense Center in Suwayda Kidnapped ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Civil Defense announced the kidnapping of the head of one of its emergency response centers in Suwayda Governorate, during a humanitarian mission aimed at evacuating a United Nations team.

In a statement published on its Facebook page today, Friday, July 18, the Civil Defense stated that Hamza al-Amareen, the head of the emergency response center, entered Suwayda on Wednesday, July 16, at 4:30 PM. He was wearing his official uniform bearing the White Helmets insignia to carry out an evacuation mission requested by the United Nations.

The statement relayed the testimony of a woman from Suwayda who was accompanying al-Amareen in his car during the mission. According to her account, local gunmen stopped the vehicle in the al-Omran area, abducted al-Amareen to an unknown location, and confiscated the vehicle he was using.

It added that contact with al-Amareen was made the following morning, Thursday, July 17, at precisely 10:00 AM, when a person answered his phone and confirmed that he was “fine and safe” before the connection was lost again. Since then, all communication attempts have failed.

The Civil Defense confirmed that it attempted to reach the abductors through local intermediaries but received no response. It held the local factions in Suwayda fully responsible for his safety, calling for his immediate release and demanding that the confiscated vehicle not be used for any activity.

The organization stressed that targeting humanitarian workers constitutes a serious violation that complicates efforts to provide aid to civilians in need in Suwayda, especially amid the ongoing security escalation and clashes between local factions and Bedouin tribes in the governorate.

The kidnapping comes amid escalating tensions in Suwayda following recent bloody clashes between local factions and armed members of Bedouin tribes. These confrontations have been accompanied by mutual abductions and roadblocks, further intensifying the security chaos and weakening the authority of official institutions.

Despite these conditions, Syrian Civil Defense teams continue their operations. They have evacuated around 50 families from the city of Suwayda and the villages of Ura, Rassas, al-Shiqrawiyah, and Kanaker to safer areas. They also established an emergency coordination room in collaboration with Daraa Governorate to meet the needs of forcibly displaced people from Suwayda.
