JERRY Jones has been predicted to hire a college football legend to be the Dallas Cowboys’ new head coach.
The decision would be shocking as the Cowboys also hired Brian Schottenheimer to be the new head coach of the franchise back in January.
APThe Dallas Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach in January[/caption] Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been tipped to hire a college football icon to be the team’s head coach in a shocking decisionAPThe Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 7-10 season.
Jones and company chose not to retain Mike McCarthy and instead promoted offensive coordinator Schottenheimer to lead the franchise.
This week, an idea has been floated in the sports media world that Alabama Crimson Tide icon Nick Saban, who now works for ESPN, can return to the head coaching ranks, either at the college or NFL level.
On Wednesday, Colin Cowherd and NFL insider Albert Breer spoke about the possibility of Saban returning to coach the Dallas Cowboys – one of the most popular sports franchises.
Breer joined Wednesday’s edition of The Herd as Cowherd gave his argument as to why Saban could be intrigued with coaching a team like the Cowboys, which has the resources to be successful.
Cowherd added that the Cowboys could be inclined to hire Saban due to Schottenheimer’s potential ineffective coaching this upcoming season.
“So [Saban’s] the greatest college football coach of all time,” Cowherd said.
“He goes to ESPN for a couple of years, and he’s been an absolute home run as an analyst.
“Got a little itch and there’s… He’s not going to Jacksonville.
“But Brian Schottenheimer is over his skis and Jerry Jones says, ‘I don’t want one of these NFL egos.’
“. … And Jerry could go to Saban and go, ‘Okay, this Schottenheimer thing doesn’t work.’
“Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts. I need a guy that knows college personnel.”
“. … If you’re talking about a guy, just ego, best coach college coach ever, absolute five-star analyst on TV, he’s not challenged, he’s still youthful, sharp as a tack, the Dallas Cowboys call.
“He’s not taking that call?”
GettySaban coached the Alabama Crimson Tide to six national championships in his 17-year tenure with the school[/caption]Breer replied and said “it does makes some sense for sure” and that the Cowboys are “not all that far” from where he won his six of his seven national championships at Alabama.
He added that there was a time in the 1990s when the Cowboys “were trying to hire” Saban during his coaching days at Michigan State.
But Breer still believes Jones wouldn’t sign Saban as it would represent “a move away from the spotlight.”
Cowherd then said that he thinks Saban has some regrets about his head coaching tenure in the NFL, where he had a 15-17 record.
SportsfileSince 2024, Saban has worked on ESPN’s College Gameday[/caption]Still, it still seems that the Cowboys would’ve hired Saban this offseason if the move was a possibility.
Saban is 73 years old and isn’t getting any younger.
He retired in 2024 after over 50 years of coaching football.
