Consumer Investigation: More Seniors Forced out of Their homes. This Time in Penfield. ...Middle East

PENFIELD, N.Y. – Legacy at Grande Vie, a senior living facility in Penfield, is closing its doors, leaving residents scrambling to find new homes.

At a meeting on Tuesday, residents were informed they would have to move. This news comes after seniors at four other facilities were also forced to leave their homes, including those at The Northfield in Fairport, which News10NBC extensively investigated.

“This difficult decision was made by the owner of the community after careful consideration and is due to ongoing financial and operational challenges that have made long-term sustainability no longer feasible,” a spokesman for Watermark Retirement Communities, the Tucson, Arizona-based company that manages Legacy at Grande Vie, told News10NBC.

Public records show the facility is owned by NorthStar Healthcare Income. In 2023, News10NBC reported that financial troubles at Legacy at Grande Vie and six other Legacy facilities were so severe that the facilities were in foreclosure and a lender had asked the court to appoint a receiver, Mike Flanagan.

According to Vicki Doyle, a spokesman for Watermark, Flanagan ultimately made the decision to close the facility. News10 NBC had not reached Flanagan for confirmation before the end of the business day.

The Legacy at Grande Vie’s website now features only a single page announcing the September 30 closure date. To learn more about the facility’s amenities, News10NBC used the Wayback Machine, an internet archiving tool, to access archived pages of the website. These pages showcase independent living apartments, an activities room, a chapel, a dining hall and a hair salon.

These amenities come at a steep price. According to the senior living website Seniorly, a studio at Legacy at Grande Vie costs $5,000 a month, while a one-bedroom apartment is nearly $6,000. However, even these high monthly rent payments were not enough to keep the facility open.

A family member of one of the residents says they were promised help with moving expenses, and a spokesman told News10NBC that residents have until September 30 to move out.

News10NBC reached out to NorthStar Healthcare Income and the receiver handling this case for further insight but has not yet received a response.
