Jay Barker, 1990-94, quarterback
Hailing from Trussville, Alabama, Barker opted to stay close to home during his college recruitment and found himself in Tuscaloosa. His first two seasons were uneventful, as he redshirted his first year and was a backup quarterback his second season.
Barker finally got the opportunity to start in 1992, and saw success immediately as Alabama won the national championship in his inaugural season as starter, passing for 1,614 yards in 12 games. He battled an injury the following season, playing in nine games after tearing a ligament in his shoulder.
Barker’s final season at Alabama proved to be his best one. He passed for 1,996 yards and 14 touchdowns, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given to the best upperclassman quarterback in college football and finishing fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. He finished his Alabama career 35-2-1 as starter.
Kevin Jackson, 1995-96, safety
Originally from Dothan, Alabama, Jackson had committed to Alabama in 1992 but wasn’t academically eligible yet, instead having to spend his first two years at Jones County Community College.
Once Jackson finally got to Tuscaloosa in the fall of 1995, he impressed with his performance, starting all 12 games of the season and recording 62 tackles with a team-high five interceptions. He recorded three of those picks in one game, tying the school record, and he was named to the All-SEC first team after the season ended.
Jackson followed up his impressive junior campaign with an even better senior season, recording 72 tackles and leading the SEC with seven interceptions. He was once again named to the All-SEC first team and was recognized as a unanimous All-American.
Trevon Diggs, 2016-19, cornerback
The Rockville, Maryland, native was a two-way player – meaning he played both cornerback and wide receiver – coming out of high school. He played sparsely on both sides of the ball his freshman campaign in Tuscaloosa, recording 88 yards on offense and five tackles and a forced fumble on defense.
His sophomore season saw him switch to cornerback full time, starting the first game but not starting again the rest of the season. Diggs finally secured a full-time starting spot in 2018, starting the first six games of the season before suffering a season-ending broken foot, recording an interception and 20 tackles.
Diggs put together his most impressive season in 2019 as he started 12 games, recording 37 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass breakups. He also had a fumble recovery and a pick six, and he was named a first-team All-SEC and a third-team All-American.
