On Tuesday, July 15, the Syrian Ministry of Defense declared a complete ceasefire in the southern province of Suwayda, following an agreement with the city’s elders and notables. Under the deal, government forces will only respond to sources of fire and any attacks by what the ministry described as “outlawed groups.”
In a statement published on the ministry’s official Facebook page, Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said that strict orders were issued to government troops stationed in Suwayda to protect civilians, maintain social peace, and safeguard public and private property.
Abu Qasra added that once ongoing combing operations are completed and calm is restored, neighborhoods in Suwayda will be handed over to the Internal Security Forces. He emphasized the ministry’s intent to ensure the safe return of residents to their homes and restore stability in the city.
Military police units have also been deployed in Suwayda to regulate army conduct and hold violators accountable, according to the minister.
Enab Baladi documented the withdrawal of Ministry of Defense convoys from the city, accompanied by footage of soldiers claiming that Suwayda is now under full government control.
Meanwhile, Ahmed al-Dalati, head of Internal Security in Suwayda, confirmed that Interior Ministry forces have begun entering the city in coordination with local religious authorities and factions operating in the area, according to Syrian state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV.
Al-Dalati stated that the deployment of internal security forces was essential to address the prevailing chaos caused by the proliferation of “unruly armed factions” that disrupted the functioning of official institutions.
He also announced plans to meet with local religious and military figures to develop a framework for administering and securing the city.
The security escalation in Suwayda appears to be winding down, with signs of reconciliation between the Syrian government and the Druze spiritual leadership.
Earlier today, the Druze spiritual authority in Suwayda welcomed the entry of Interior and Defense Ministry forces to assert control over military and security centers and stabilize the province.
The leadership called on all armed factions in Suwayda to cooperate with the Interior Ministry, avoid armed resistance, and surrender their weapons to help prevent further bloodshed and restore order.
Al-Dalati praised the spiritual leadership’s position—led by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri—as a responsible national stance and urged all other religious and social figures to support the government’s efforts to reestablish control and ensure public safety.
However, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri later stated that the statement welcoming government forces was issued under pressure from the Syrian government and foreign actors.
The recent tensions in Suwayda were triggered by an incident in which unidentified gunmen intercepted a young man named Fadlallah Dawara near the village of Kharbet al-Shayab, south of Damascus, as he returned to Suwayda in a vegetable truck on Saturday morning.
The incident led to armed clashes between local factions in Suwayda and fighters near the administrative border with Daraa, prompting the intervention of the Defense and Interior Ministries.
