A 43-year-old man was arrested Monday after a lengthy standoff with police in La Mesa, prompted by alleged acts of domestic violence over the weekend.
Officers responded at 9:45 p.m. Sunday to reports of an argument between an armed man and his girlfriend at a residence in the 6900 block of Hoffman Ave., according to the La Mesa Police Department.
Hoffman AvenueA teen, who reportedly made the call, and another child were inside the home, but police said that they were picked up safely by their mother before the standoff began.
Responding officers asked the suspect to exit the home and to speak to his girlfriend, who was believed to be a hostage, but he refused.
The suspect also allegedly made threatening statements and exited the home waving a shotgun. However, he did not discharge the weapon, police said. The department then requested assistance, including an SDPD SWAT team, hostage negotiators, and a crisis team.
The man surrendered to authorities around 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said. Surrounding streets were reopened to traffic shortly before 7:30 a.m.
