Rory McIlroy gave a damning assessment of the greens in North Berwick after missing a putt at the Scottish Open.
The Northern Irishman finished as runner-up at the Renaissance Club on Sunday, as he was denied glory by an unexpected champion in the form of world number 158 Chris Gotterup.
Rory McIlroy narrowly missed out on a second Scottish Open titleGettyMcIlroy missed out on victory by just two shots, as he rounded off four rounds of golf with an impressive 13-under-par.
It was a strong showing from the Masters champion, who has struggled for form since he completed the career Grand Slam with victory at August in April.
But things could have gone even better for McIlroy, who held a shared overnight lead with Gotterup heading into the final round.
The 36-year-old then edged clear with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, but failed to better his score after the eighth hole, with a run of 10 straight pars on the back nine.
Gotterup took advantage of this, gaining shots on McIlroy on the 10th and 12th holes to win the tournament on 15-under-par.
And McIlroy was unable to hide his frustrations at times as he faltered towards the end of the tournament.
This was particularly clear when he slammed the Renaissance Club greens after one of his putts went wide of the hole in the final round.
Footage from the crowd shows McIlroy raging: “The greens are so s***!”
The golf star’s second-place finish meant he was unable to add to his previous Scottish Open title, having triumphed on the same course in 2023.
It also saw McIlroy miss out on a huge $1.5million (£1.17m) in prize money, as he instead had to settle for $788,175m (£586,025m) alongside fellow runner-up Marco Penge.

Speaking after the tournament, which saw him total 19 birdies across the week, he said: “No frustration; it’s been a great week.
“I’m really happy with where my game is; the way I played over the weekend; the shots that I hit, how I controlled my ball flight. Missing the trophy, that’s about it.”
McIlroy also offered a more measured explanation for his lack of cutting edge to his putting game at the end of the competition, as he looked ahead to the upcoming Open Championship.
He said of the conditions: “It was pretty windy and was hard to get the ball super close, but I gave myself plenty of chances coming down the stretch.
“I feel like the greens got a little bumpy. I had some good putts that just didn’t go in, whether they were mis-reads or poor speed.

I’m looking forward to getting to Portrush tonight and getting out on to the golf course early tomorrow.”
After ending the day in Scotland, McIlroy immediately headed back home to Northern Ireland, as he arrived at Royal Portrush on Sunday night, which plays host to this year’s Open, starting on Thursday.
With his last victory at the British major coming in 2014, he will now be hoping to clinch a second title on home turf, while last year’s champion Xander Schauffele looks to defend his crown.
