The former Doctor Who star was previously announced back at the start of May as being the UK's official spokesperson, which would have extended Doctor Who's connections to the event after its own Interstellar Song Contest episode.
Appearing on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Gatwa was quizzed about why he chose to step back from his previously announced Eurovision role.
"But I was just very busy, had a lot of work schedules – a lot of press around The Roses, around Doctor. Yeah, there was just a lot of press."
