Volunteer fire departments across the Buckeye State are experiencing reduced staffing levels at the same time they are receiving an increased number of calls. Of course, most of those who are working in those departments also have full-time jobs; and for many, those jobs are also jobs of service.
That’s why the State Fire Marshal Division and Ohio Department of Transportation took a moment Tuesday to recognize the more than 70 ODOT employees who also serve as volunteer firefighters or emergency medical technicians. The event focused on employees in ODOT Districts 5, 9, 10 and 11 in southeast Ohio.
“Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of many Ohio communities, and their selfless dedication saves lives every single day,” said State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon. “The individuals we honored today are not only serving the state through their work with ODOT, but are also stepping up to protect and support their neighbors in times of need. They are true role models for others to follow.”
Yes, this group of men and women pulls double duty serving their communities, but everyone who chooses to give of their time and themselves by serving as a volunteer firefighter or EMT is to be commended for their dedication.
“Volunteer roles are essential to the safety and resilience of Ohio’s communities, and today’s event serves as a reminder that anyone can make a difference, even while pursuing a full-time career,” ODOT and the state fire marshal said in a joint news release.
