Dylan Dreyer opened up about supporting Today costar Sheinelle Jones after the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh.

“She’s in mom mode right now, she has three young kids that she has to care for and it’s a really tough time for the family,” Dreyer, 43, told Access Hollywood on Wednesday, July 9.

Ojeh’s death was announced on Today on May 23 following his battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. He is survived by Jones, 47, and their three kids, Kayin, 15, and twins Uche and Clara, 12.

“We are all there to support her in any way we can, and she’s just taking the time that she needs to spend with those kids,” Dreyer added. “I can’t even imagine what they are going through, what she is going through. She’s being strong for them.”

Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer Talk Supporting Sheinelle Jones After Husband's Death

The meteorologist emphasized that the Today crew is “like a family” and they talk regularly outside of their work on the show.

“We call each other all the time, even just, you know, Al Roker is the first person to send me a handwritten letter and just be like, ‘I just want you to know that I’m proud of you,’ and it’s like, ‘Oh, Al!’” Dreyer said.

Jones last appeared on Today in December 2024 before taking a break from the show to focus on the private family health matter. She was not present for Hoda Kotb’s final broadcast on the series on January 10 or Craig Melvin’s first day as Kotb’s replacement on January 13.

“There is no timing on when she will be back,” a source told Us Weekly in May. “Everyone is shocked and just so sad. Everyone can’t imagine what she’s gone through. She left in December and [has] been so quiet [and] focusing on her family.”

While Jones has not publicly revealed when she will be returning to Today, she can always count on her costars being there for her amid her period of grief outside of the show.

Savannah Guthrie held back tears remembering Ojeh during the May 23 broadcast of the morning talk show.

“There are no words for the pain we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children,” she said at the time. “Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him. And so we want to take a moment to tell you more about the remarkable man who was Sheinelle’s perfect partner in life.”

Stars Rally Around Sheinelle Jones After Death of Husband Uche Ojeh

Melvin, 46, remembered the final day he got to spend with Ojeh before his death.

“The last time we played golf together last fall, we had a number of conversations about just life in general,” he shared. “And one thing he always talked about, he talked about those kids. He loved those kids more than anything else in this world and was just so proud. He was that dad that was on the sidelines of all the soccer games. He was at all the concerts and the recitals. He was that guy.”

He praised Jones for the way she was there for her family during the difficult time.

“Dealing with a husband who’s battling cancer and three young children that she has had to rear by herself for a while now, essentially,” Melvin said. “It’s just, it really is remarkable.”
