ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Travelers at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport can now keep their shoes on while passing through security checkpoints. The Department of Homeland Security announced this change earlier this week, ending a nearly 20-year-old policy.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the change follows a successful pilot program that tested new equipment capable of maintaining security standards without requiring travelers to remove their shoes. While exceptions may occur, the new standard allows shoes to stay on.
Najla, a traveler, said, “It sped up the process, which was nice I mean we don’t want to smell funky feet.”
Tristen, another traveler, said he first tried to take his shoes off while going through TSA early Thursday and it was a “nice surprise,” that TSA stopped him.
A third traveler, Reginald Boykins, also shared his thoughts, saying it was better not having to take his shoes off.
“I don’t like taking my shoes off too much. I like to go straight in, go through customs and go right on my flight. That was perfect. I like it,” said Boykins.
Previously, only TSA PreCheck members, who paid about $80 for a five-year membership, could keep their shoes on during security checks. The new policy aims to speed up the process for everyone.
However, the policy does not affect other security checkpoint rules, such as removing laptops or light jackets. Travelers are advised to check with TSA agents for clarity on these items.
The TSA also launched a “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program, offering military members and their families expedited lane access at some checkpoints and discounts on TSA PreCheck enrollment.
