Welcome to your Denver Nuggets 2025 Summer League Preview!

The Nuggets will be playing five games from July 10th to as far out as July 20th depending on how well they do. While the current team isn’t stacked with former lottery picks, there are enough returning and older players to potentially make some noise. Summer League head coach Andrew Munson will be coaching the team for the second year in a row, and there will be some new and returning faces he will be working with in Las Vegas.

Here’s what you need to know:

Who’s on the Team?

The most important names to know are the ones who will be on the Nuggets roster next season. DaRon Holmes II (14) and Hunter Tyson (5) are on full-time rookie contracts, while Spencer Jones (21) and Tamar Bates (23) are on two-way contracts. Those are are likely to be the starters in the first two or three games for the Nuggets, after which adjustments to the lineup and rotation will probably be made for those guys.

Holmes is making his return from a torn achilles that happened at last year’s Summer League. I wrote a story earlier in the week about Holmes’ excitement and build-up to this moment. He’s of course looking forward to making an impression with the team and with Nuggets fans.

Beyond Holmes, Hunter Tyson will be playing in Las Vegas for the third straight year. He’s probably the Nuggets player with the most to prove heading into next season about whether he can hang at the NBA level. This moment and how he handles it could end up meaning a lot for his future.

Spencer Jones will make his Summer League debut today. He was injured during the festivities last year. He looked good in Nuggets practices and is a role player to watch with great defensive tools. Tamar Bates is a shooter and slasher who the Nuggets signed to a two-way contract after the NBA Draft a couple weeks ago. Perhaps he can blossom into a 3&D guard at the NBA level.

After those four, it will be about who makes an impression and who can handle the pressure of an opportunity. E.J. Liddell is a former highly rated player who had a major knee injury after being drafted in 2023. There are some other players who might make a statement, but we will have to see who comes to play this week.

What should expectations be?

It would be unfair to over-index on Summer League too much. There are times when players look really good and end up being great (Nikola Jokic). There are times where they play poorly and they end up being unfit for the NBA stage. There are also situations where players play well and are still really bad like Nikoloz Tskitishvili, who won Summer League MVP for the Nuggets in the early 2000’s after being drafted fifth overall by the Nuggets in 2002. He was out of the NBA after four years.

This also goes the other direction too. Last year, Jalen Pickett really, really…really struggled in Las Vegas. Whether it was the environment, the injury, bad digestion, who knows what, Pickett just didn’t play well. He ended up carrying that stigma with him into last season, and he ultimately still found a way to make a positive impact during the regular season. Calling Pickett “not an NBA player” after struggling at Summer League was clearly an overreaction by many, and it’s important to learn from that for this year.

I’m expecting flashes from DaRon Holmes coming off of a torn achilles as he gets comfortable playing basketball again, not sustained greatness for the entirety of Summer League. I’m expecting Hunter Tyson to look like he’s above Summer League this year after two years at the NBA level. I’m expecting Spencer Jones to have spent some time in the lab ironing out his jumper and to see some shots go down. I’m expecting Tamar Bates to look the part of a 3&D shooter and to attack the gaps of Summer League defenses off the dribble.

If we don’t see those things, it’s not the end of the world. Summer League is supposed to be fun. It’s not the be-all-end-all of who makes it big at the NBA level. It’s just a fun week and a half in Vegas.

Hopefully, the Nuggets have some fun while they’re down there.
