There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Florida football in 2025, but every team faces questions with at least one position group.
On Wednesday, ESPN released a new story with one of “area of concern” for every team in its post-spring top 25. DJ Lagway led the Gators to a strong finish last season, but will that momentum carry over into 2025? ESPN’s Harry Lyles Jr. wonders about Lagway’s targets in the passing game, naming receiver as the area of concern for UF:
One of the reasons Florida is expected to improve in 2025 is because of the talent that quarterback DJ Lagway brings. But the Gators’ top receivers from last season, Elijhah Badger and Chimere Dike, left for the NFL. Eugene Wilson III is back, but also coming off season-ending hip surgery. It will be up to Vernell Brown III, Dallas Wilson, Naeshaun Montgomery and J. Michael Sturdivant (UCLA transfer) to help establish themselves.
Wilson is an established playmaker when healthy, recording 61 catches for 538 yards and 6 touchdowns in 10 games as a freshman. He was limited to 4 games in 2024, logging 19 receptions for 266 yards and 1 touchdown.
The other 4 receivers Lyles mentioned are newcomers. Brown and Wilson finished as the 247Sports Composite’s Nos. 6 and 8 wideouts in the 2025 class, so they’re both expected to be instant-impact contributors. Wilson had a monster spring game performance of 10 catches and 195 yards with 2 touchdowns, which Gator Nation hopes is a preview of what’s to come. Montgomery finished as the Composite’s No. 23 wideout.
Florida coach Billy Napier has done well with wide receivers from the transfer portal, bringing in Ricky Pearsall from Arizona State and developing him into a first-round NFL Draft pick before landing Badger and Dike for the 2024 roster. A transfer has been Florida’s leading receiver in each of Napier’s first 3 seasons, so the expectations are understandably high for Sturdivant to make it 4 for 4.
