Luis Enrique will renew his rivalry with former club Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard spent five years with the club during the 1990s after signing from Sporting Gijon.

He won a league title during that time before completing a shock switch to bitter rivals Barcelona in 1996.

Enrique went on to become captain during eight years at the Nou Camp, where he won seven major trophies.

Those included two league titles and the Cup Winners’ Cup for Barca.

The midfielder would ultimately retire aged 34 before returning to the club as manager in 2014.

His comeback resulted in an historic treble victory during his first season in charge.

Enrique also won four of his eight meetings with Real Madrid as Barca boss but his most heated return to the Santiago Bernabeu came as a player.

The two clubs met in the Spanish capital in April 2003 with the visitors out of the title race.

However, they were able to snatch a 1-1 draw thanks to an equaliser from Enrique.

His passionate celebration infuriated the home crowd after showing his shirt to the rival supporters.

Meanwhile, Enrique also clashed with Zinedine Zidane after the Frenchman appeared to lash out at Carles Puyol.

Zidane was confronted by the Barca skipper before shoving his face as a brawl ensued between players from both sides.

The Real Madrid man was booked for his antics but Enrique avoided a second yellow card having been cautioned earlier in the match.

Following the draw, he addressed his goal celebration, telling reporters: “I’m not surprised that everyone is ‘cheering me on.’

“If you don’t like the way I celebrate, don’t come. Now, on TV or in photos, I look strange in white.”

However, former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz saw the incident differently.

He exclaimed: “It was a provocation from a player who, by the way, was very well paid. His statements were pathetic.”

Enrique is now set to renew his rivalry with his former club on Wednesday at the Club World Cup.

His Paris Saint-Germain side will face Real Madrid in their semi-final in New York.

The winner will take on Chelsea in Sunday’s final, with the match his first meeting since taking over of the French outfit.

Enrique was appointed by PSG in 2023 and guided the club to their first treble last season.
