On Wednesday, July 9, the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH) announced the launch of a new program to safeguard Syria’s cultural heritage, with an initial two-year budget of $5 million.
According to a statement published on its official website, the initiative follows a visit by ALIPH’s Executive Director, Valéry Freland, to Syria in April. During the visit, Freland toured several heritage sites in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, and Krak des Chevaliers.
He also held extensive discussions with Anas Haj Zeidan, Director-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM), and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
The new program aims to support the protection and restoration of archaeological sites, historical neighborhoods, religious buildings, and monuments. It also includes the rehabilitation of museums and their collections, in addition to training and professional exchanges for heritage specialists.
The statement noted that ALIPH and DGAM have expressed readiness to collaborate on restoring the ancient city of Palmyra, rehabilitating its museum, and stabilizing several damaged artifacts at the site.
Palmyra holds symbolic importance for ALIPH, as the destruction inflicted on the site in 2015 was a key factor in the organization’s founding in 2017.
This new initiative builds on ALIPH’s long-term commitment to Syria, which began in 2019. Since then, the organization has allocated $3 million to support 18 projects, including the rehabilitation of Raqqa Museum and emergency interventions in Aleppo and Krak des Chevaliers following the 2023 earthquake.
ALIPH stated that it seeks to make Syria’s rich cultural heritage a pillar of the country’s reconstruction, contributing to sustainable economic and social development and promoting dialogue for peace.
