Just weeks later, Garcia died on August 9, 1995, from a heart attack at a drug treatment facility in California. He had long been suffering from diabetes, heart problems, and the effects of decades of substance abuse.

Despite the monumental loss of Garcia, the Grateful Dead continued to evolve, with surviving members forming various offshoots like The Other Ones and later Dead & Company.
