ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester City Council has launched the “Read Alliance Program,” bringing new summer learning opportunities to 90 students entering the first, second and third grades.

The program, which is hosted at RCSD School No. 16 and School No. 22, began on July 7, and runs through August 14. The program is part of an ongoing city council effort to increase summer learning opportunities. The city council provided funding for the program, and the RCSD is providing locations, teachers and paraprofessionals.

In-Depth: About the program

The curriculum has been operating in New York City for 25 years, and is now being used in Rochester for neighborhood-based initiatives.

Students will engage in a free phonics-based reading program taught by paid youth tutors. The goal is to offer a welcoming environment for young learners to be mentored by older peers, as well as creating summer employment opportunities for youth in Rochester.

“This program is a major step in closing the gap in summertime opportunities for our students,” City Council Vice President Miguel A. Meléndez said. “Throughout Monroe County, our students’ suburban counterparts are offered countless opportunities for summer learning, enrichment and recreation. With the Read Alliance program, we are moving closer to equitable access to opportunity for all students within the City of Rochester.”
