So, it’s only natural, that the pitch has become the centre of focus for England, after the hosts lost to India at Edgbaston by a massive margin of 336 runs. So much so, that even coach Brendon McCullum had to request the Lord’s curators to prepare a wicket that would suit their pacers, and bowling in general. But then, nothing can be said for sure, with just a couple of days left for the start of the third IND vs ENG Test.
IND vs ENG, 3rd Test Lord’s
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the first look of the Lord’s pitch was also out. RevSportz tweeted out the picture, where batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and Gautam Gambhir were seen having a close look at it. To describe the wicket condition on -2 days, it sported decent covering of grass, spread out proportionally.

While the grass cover, it is expected, will stay. That means, the pacers can have a lot more purchase, and there won’t be much wear and tear on offer. It could be fair to say that the role of spinners might be lessened in this particular contest. In fact, Team India could only be tempted to leave out an additional spinner, if the need be, and get in Dhruv Jurel, who can be a handy batter in the lower order. But of course, this is all a speculation for now.
It is also important to understand, as to how the pitch played in the last match, the WTC final between Australia and South Africa, and also the last time India played here in 2021. Starting with the more recent match — the final in June — it was nothing short of a batting nightmare for majority of the match.
Lesser Role for Spinners?
Teams struggled to get to 200, and the batting looked fairly easy in the last innings, where the Proteas went on to complete a chase of 282, with five wickets to spare. The lone centurion in the match was Aiden Markram, and only three wickets fell to the spinners.
Now, in 2021, the nature of pitch looked slightly different, was decent for batting. India had gone on to win that encounter by a massive 151 runs. In the first innings they posted 364. In reply, England scored 391, and then India responded with 298 in the third innings. Post that, the hosts were bundled out for 120. Meanwhile, out of all the wickets that fell, spinners bagged only three, and Ravindra Jadeja bagged 0.
