Haas drivers' clash a result of team's ‘terrible execution’ - Komatsu ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu labeled the collision between drivers Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon in the British Grand Prix as a racing incident – but one that served as the final act in a play of poor execution.

Bearman and Ocon collided on Lap 44 of the British Grand Prix in a clumsy and costly tangle at Brooklands, wiping out any hope of a points finish in the slippery, mixed conditions.

The synchronised spin left both drivers outside of the top ten at the chequered flag – and left team principal Ayao Komatsu fuming.

Still, Komatsu stopped short of assigning blame, instead offering a frank assessment of the bigger picture.

“It Just Shouldn’t Happen”

“Our drivers touching is the last thing that should happen,” Komatsu admitted post-race. “But I looked at the onboard of both drivers, I spoke with them both, and for me it was a racing incident.”

The incident itself was rooted in Haas’s chaotic race execution, according to Komatsu, who pointed to poor positioning and strategic missteps earlier in the weekend.

“We executed a terrible race today,” he said bluntly. “We have to be better, we shouldn’t be starting from P14 and P18 where we’re then trying to force the result.

“So we need to focus on executing three clean days on a race weekend and getting the result that our car deserves.”

The specifics of the incident, Komatsu explained, were unfortunate but predictable given the circumstances.

“If you look at how they ended up in that situation, the pitstop timings for that stop were correct, so we pitted the lead car first,” he added.

“Ollie then went off in a high-speed corner, and that’s why he was behind his team-mate when Esteban came out after his stop.

“As Ollie had hotter tyres than Esteban, he went for the overtake, but we shouldn’t have been in that position to start with. It just shouldn’t happen.”

Frustration in the Cockpit

The incident capped off a frustrating race day for both Haas drivers – albeit in different ways.

Esteban Ocon, still struggling to get comfortable in the newly upgraded VF-25, made no attempt to sugar-coat his day.

“It was a frustrating race,” Ocon said. “We need to review so many things that have happened. There was a lot to review in that race.

“It wasn’t an easy one and not a fun one from inside the car. The car was also pretty difficult to drive the whole race. It was about trying to stay on track the whole race, so it wasn’t fun.”

Meanwhile, Bearman – who had made it into Q3 before serving a massive 10-place grid penalty for a red flag infringement in FP3 – had hoped to make a splash at his home Grand Prix. Despite showing strong pace on Sunday, the incident with Ocon only added to what was already a turbulent weekend.

“Yeah, it was a close moment. I need to review it with the team,” Bearman said. “I mean, it was messy. Of course, I had really warm tyres, everyone else had much cooler tyres and I had a lot more grip at that stage, but yeah, it was a mess.”

Bigger Problems at Play

The clash is likely to sting for a while at Haas. Not only did it cost the team valuable points, but it also underlined the its continuing issues with race execution – despite the VF-25 showing glimpses of real midfield potential.

Komatsu’s admission that the team “executed a terrible race” is perhaps more alarming than the on-track clash itself. While the team boss was right to avoid turning the collision into a blame game, the deeper concern remains Haas’s persistent failure to turn opportunities into results.

Dropping to ninth in the Constructors’ standings after a weekend where upgrades and changing conditions could’ve opened the door to a bigger haul, Haas now faces a long debrief — and serious questions heading into the next round.
