Belinda Bencic was overcome with emotion as she reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in her career.

The 28-year-old defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(4), 6-4 to make the final eight at the All England Club on her ninth visit.

It is the first time she has been to the quarter-finals of a Slam outside the US Open.

The 2020 Olympic Games gold medal winner was seen wiping away tears immediately after her victory.

The win was made all the more poignant as it was the first time she had reached a quarter-final as a mum.

Bencic gave birth to daughter Bella 15 months ago and only returned to the professional tennis tour in January.

She now travels around the globe balancing life as a mother and a tennis player.

Speaking after her round of 16 victory at Wimbledon, she said: “Honestly, it’s been really amazing. I’m really proud of myself and the whole team.

“I think we did an amazing job coming back and I’m really enjoying it.

“At the moment it is kind of easy travelling with her, it will only get harder.

“It’s amazing to share the memories as a family and of course to come here as a family I feel like I am taking more pictures and just enjoying it more.

“I’m juggling it like every mum does, props to the mums!”

The performance was made all the more special because the last time she was at Wimbledon she lost to Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 back in 2023, but squandered two match points.

Bencic also became the fourth female Swiss tennis player to reach the quarter-finals, alongside Martina Hingis, Timea Bacsinszky and Viktorija Golubic.

She added: “I always got stuck in the fourth round.

“It was so important for me today to be able to breakthrough to the quarterfinals. It’s crazy. It’s really a dream come true. It’s crazy. I’m so happy.”

Bencic will face the winner of Mirra Andreeva vs Emma Navarro in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, which will be played on Wednesday.

It will be a big test for the Swiss star, but, speaking before the tournament, she admitted she was proud of how her body was able to adapt.

She said: “I’m most proud of my body. For sure, I’ve never thought of my tennis in this way, but the journey it’s been through, the hormonal changes, the physical changes, it’s amazing what a women’s body can do.

“I’m happy with the way I was able to push my way thorough to come back, working really hard.

“Of course there are challenges and niggles along the way, but in general I’m proud of how I can be here.”

The next stop will be making the semi-finals of a Slam for just the second time in her career.
