MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A heartbreaking accident unfolded Sunday afternoon in Monroe when a car crash claimed the lives of a father and his young son.
Monroe Police now say speed was likely a contributing factor in the fiery wreck that killed 38-year-old Wilson Antonio Broadway Jr. and his 4-year-old son, Ja’Miaz Robinson Broadway.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the intersection of E. Franklin Street and Morgan Mill Road. First responders arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts, both the father and his son were pronounced dead at the scene.
Monroe Police say their initial investigation suggests speed played a role in the collision. The case remains under active investigation by the department’s Traffic Division, which is continuing to piece together exactly what led to the deadly crash.
"Monroe Police Department urges all motorists to drive responsibly and remember that speed limits are in place to protect everyone on the road," Lieutenant Morgan Malone said.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about what happened to call the Monroe Police Traffic Division at 704-282-4700.
