Max Homa, it’s time to pay your debts.

The American was firmly in contention going into the final round of the John Deere Classic as he sat one stroke behind leader Davis Thompson.

Being so high up on the leaderboard was not familiar territory for Homa given he has recorded just one top-25 finish all year and hadn’t won a PGA Tour tournament since January 2023.

Unfortunately for Homa, he could not hold his nerve at TPC Deere Run as he finished T5.

A score of 69 for two-under in the final round meant Homa finished two strokes behind eventual winner Brian Campbell, who had to beat Emiliano Grillo in a play-off to claim victory.

Homa began brightly with three birdies on the opening four holes.

But a costly performance with his putter all but ended his hopes for a drought-breaking victory.

Homa had the chance to take sole possession of the lead on the eighth, but missed his birdie putt to record a par.

A bogey on the ninth coupled with a birdie for Campbell on the same hole meant Homa fell two strokes behind the lead.

Homa slipped up again on the green of the 15th when he missed a six-foot putt for par.

Although he bounced back with a birdie on the following hole, Homa misfired a crucial 10-foot putt on the 17th that would have brought him back to three-under for the round.

A par on the final hole completed Homa’s time at TPC Deere Run to finish in a six-way tie for fifth.

It is Homa’s best finish in an event since he was tied for third at The Masters in 2024 and it earned him a cool $278,250 (£204,537).

But one bold punter felt he was owed a four-figure fee from Homa and requested some of his winnings via money wiring app Venmo.

In a screenshot shared on his Instagram story, Homa revealed a user named Carl Watkins sent him a request for $1900 ‘because you can’t putt under pressure’.

Homa replied with some sage advice: “Gamble like a big boy Carl and take your lumps like the rest of us.”

World number one Scottie Scheffler recently deleted his Venmo account because fans kept sending him money requests.

“That’s why I had to get rid of my Venmo because I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn’t win,” he said before the US Open.

“It wasn’t a good feeling.”

Scheffler added: “I don’t remember the most that somebody would send me. Maybe a couple bucks here or there. That didn’t happen nearly as much as the requests did.”

Although Homa enjoyed his best finish in over a year, he was left to lament what could and perhaps should have been at the John Deere Classic.

“Super disappointing,” Homa said.

“But game felt good, so that’s nice.”

Homa added: “Made a lot of good swings, so could have made some better, I guess, decisions, but for the most part executed about how I wanted to.

“Game feels good.”
