Nico Hulkenberg ended the longest run without a podium in Formula 1 history, but didn’t get any silverware to go with it.
The German finally stepped on an F1 rostrum for the first time after a record 238 races, coming from 19th in arguably the slowest car on the grid.
Hulkenberg finally made it onto an F1 podium, ending the longest wait in historyGetty But his trophy was probably the least valuable of the seasonGettyThe achievement will undoubtedly be looked back upon as a highlight of the 2025 season, but Hulkenberg’s trophy cabinet certainly won’t have gone up much in price.
That’s because this year’s trophy was made by Lego, who also sponsored braking boards trackside.
Their capture of the trophy rights was only announced shortly before the race which was won by Lando Norris from teammate Oscar Piastri.
Weighing in over 2kg with over 2000 pieces, the trophy certainly was a feat of design, but nothing compared to the regular Silverstone trophy – one of the most beautiful of the season.
And during the post-race press conference, Piastri couldn’t help but joke about the disappointment.
Hijacking the media’s questioning, he said: “I also have a question for Nico…
“How does it feel after 15 years of F1 to get a podium that’s made out of Lego that you can just pull apart?
“Just made out of Lego that you can pull apart and probably buy next week?”
With his trademark smile, Hulkenberg then responded: “I love Lego!
“It’s good, my daughter can play with it too. You’ve always got to see the bright side.
Hulkenberg had the perfect response after Piastri cracked the room upGetty But he will have just been overjoyed to end F1’s longest unwanted record“But a bit of silver or gold would have been nice too. I won’t complain.”
Hulkenberg’s remarkable podium will have provoked smiles all across the F1 world as it ended arguably the most unwanted record in the sport’s history.
The now 37-year-old joined F1 back in 2010 with Williams and has been one of the series most reliable and consistent drivers.
Yet his previous best had been fourth place on three occasions and it looked like his record would stand for a long time when he couldn’t land a drive in 2021.
He hasn’t skipped a beat since returning, though, and has now added to his 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans win.
Adding his thoughts on his achievement, he said: “It’s a lot to take and process.
Even with Norris winning his home race Hulkenberg was the story of the dayGetty“It’s been a very intense race. I think Lando has put it pretty well. It’s so intense for us in the car. In these changeable conditions. On a damp track.
“You always feel like you’re one foot away from the wall when you’re exploring and you’re on the limit and trying to push.
“Everything came together and it’s obviously a big relief. I’m very happy. It was a very positive day.
“From a massive low yesterday, being last on the grid to this result. It’s kind of surreal. It’s going to take a few days, a few moments to process everything and take it all in.
“The good news is we have two weeks left to enjoy it. To celebrate it properly over the next week.”
