Nicolas Jarry was not a fan of Cameron Norrie taking his time between first and second serves.
Yet the Chilean’s complaints regarding the Brit supposedly bouncing the ball an unnecessary number of times remained unresolved as chair umpire Eva Asredaki-Moore deemed Norrie’s alleged act was not ‘intentional’.
BBCJarry aired his concerns about a supposedly intentional act of Norrie’s to the umpire[/caption]Jarry vented his fury to the official at the end of the second set after Norrie, who briefly exited Court 1 for a bathroom break, raced out to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) lead in their fourth round match at Wimbledon.
He said: “What is the rule there?
“The problem is, is it normal to do that when it affects the other player?
“You have to intervene there or I have to suck it. That’s the real issue, it doesn’t matter the reason. It is the same as hitting the ball anywhere.
“It’s not intentional, but you have to apply the code as well. How is it now?
“He can perfectly stop doing it, it’s not a nervous tick. It’s something he can control. It’s not a nervous tick.
“You think there’s nothing I can do so I just have to suck it up, because he does it always.
“That’s a reason for me to have to play with something that affects me. It can be changed, it’s not something that cannot be changed.”
Asderaki-Moore understood Jarry’s frustration, but pointed out she would only intervene ‘If I think there is a reason to step in.’
But the umpire’s claim only frustrated Jarry, who continued to vent.
Jarry felt Norrie did not need to take so long between first and second servesGetty“I don’t want to force you into anything,” Jarry remarked.
“I just want to do what the rules say. And if there is not a rule, then tell me and I cannot do anything about it.”
Asderaki-Moore reminded the Chilean what the official ruling regarding the delay between a first and second serve was.
She stated: “The rule is if it’s intentional that he is disturbing, then I can do something about it.”
As Norrie re-emerged onto Court 1, Jarry replied: “OK, so it has to be intentional, if it’s not intentional, then there’s nothing I can do.
“If that’s the rule, then I don’t need you to say something. I just want to play by the rules because it affects me.”
The Chilean rebounded in impressive fashion after he lost the opening two setsAFP via GettyWhatever frustrations Jarry had with Norrie, he channelled it into his on-court play.
Jarry clawed back the two-set deficit to level proceedings as he held his nerve in two nail-biting tie-breaks.
The winner of Norrie and Jarry’s fourth round encounter will face either Andrey Rublev or two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final.
