Diamondbacks’ Eugenio Suarez, Corbin Carroll named All-Stars ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte will be joined by teammates Eugenio Suarez and Corbin Carroll at the 2025 MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta.

MLB announced reserves and pitchers for the Midsummer Classic on Sunday, who were picked via player ballots and the commissioner’s office.

Marte made the starting lineup through the fan vote, while Suarez and Carroll will come of the bench for the National League in their second All-Star Game appearances, respectively. The Diamondbacks have a top three scoring offense with 5.18 runs per game, and getting three hitters in the All-Star Game is a testament to that.

Arizona Diamondbacks reinstate Corbin Carroll off injured list

Suarez will back up San Diego third baseman Manny Machado. Carroll was one of four reserve outfielders on the list, along with Washington’s James Wood, San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and Miami’s Kyle Stowers.

D-backs shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, first baseman Josh Naylor and starting pitcher Merrill Kelly made cases during the first half but were left off the team.

The Diamondbacks have multiple All-Stars for the second time since 2019. They rostered four All-Stars in 2023 with Carroll, Zac Gallen, Perdomo and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. making the team. Marte was the lone player to make it last year.

Eugenio Suarez is back to the All-Star Game

Suarez is an All-Star for the first time since 2018, when he represented the Cincinnati Reds.

That may be surprising for a player with Suarez’s credentials (more than 300 career home runs and 900s RBIs), but third base was a tough spot to crack during Suarez’s prime years with the Reds. Nolan Arenado started the Midsummer Classic three straight years from 2017-19.

Suarez’s case this year was clear, he has been a premier power hitter this season with 28 home runs and 73 RBIs coming into Sunday. He ranked fourth in home runs and third in RBIs in MLB before hearing his name called.

His .891 OPS ranked 13th in MLB and 10th in the National League.

When telling the story of the first half of this baseball season, Suarez’s four home runs in a single game has to be mentioned as one of the most incredible feats accomplished on the field. No player had hit four home runs in a game since J.D. Martinez for Arizona in 2017.

Suarez is also tied for the league lead with three grand slams and won NL Player of the Week three times.

His first half this season could not be more different than where he stood a year ago, when he was a bottom 10 hitter in baseball with a .612 OPS and six home runs. Changes in his pregame preparation aided in his ability to turn his 2024 around, and he’s maintained that level of play.

“ I told myself early this year that one of my goals was to be part of the All-Star Game,” Suarez said. “Today, now that dream came true. Even if this is not my first, I feel like it’s the first one because my last one was like seven years ago. It has been a long time and it’s been something I’ve been dreaming for. … To represent the D-backs in Atlanta for the All Star-Game is awesome.”

What a difference a year can make, and the same can be said for his teammate.

Corbin Carroll returns to All-Star Game

Carroll returned to star form over the closing two months of last season, and after making some mechanical adjustments over the offseason, his power numbers have jumped off the page this year.

Carroll’s slugging percentage of .564 is fifth in MLB, while he’s hit 20 home runs for the third straight season already. Last year, it took Carroll 148 games to reach 20 home runs. This season, he did it in 68 games.

He is one of five players this season with 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases, plus he leads MLB with nine triples. Carroll has slashed .251/.335/.564 for an OPS of .899, similar to the power hitter prototype he displayed at the end of last season.

“ I think it says a lot about the work we put in, both individually but as a group, too,” Carroll said. “I think when you talk about the individual accomplishments and accolades and being recognized, a lot of that is based on the work of the whole of our offense.”

Carroll returned from the injured list on Saturday after he suffered a fractured wrist. Getting back before the All-Star break was a stated goal, but Carroll said his intention was to get back as soon as possible while the D-backs fight to get back in the NL Wild Card race with the trade deadline at the end of the month.

When is the All-Star Game?

The Home Run Derby is on July 14, and the All-Star Game in on July 15.

Suarez said he’d accept an invitation to the derby if asked. Carroll said it was out of the question this season.
