By now, you’ve probably noticed the exchange that takes place after every point between the player that is serving and the ball boys and ball girls. It goes like this: A player looks at a ball boy or girl, who shows how many balls they have available by displaying them proudly in the air before throwing them to the player. Then, the player inspects the balls and chooses which one they'd like to play with for the next point.

According to Wimbledon, new balls are used during the first seven games and switched out every nine games after that. The reason is because the balls used at the start of the match are also used for warm-ups before the first set, so they're played for fewer games.

Let's break down the numbers.

To put it in perspective, that's around 2.25 miles of tennis balls, which is enough to line across the Golden Gate Bridge twice, or about the length of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It's almost too many to wrap your head around!

So, what happens to the tennis balls after they’ve lived their nine-game lives on court?  Wimbledon gives them a new lease on life and sells them on the tournament grounds, donating the proceeds to the Wimbledon Foundation.
