India’s player rating for 2nd England Test: Gill & Akash Deep shine, Nair & Nitish Reddy struggle ...Middle East

India has claimed a famous win. A first one at Edgbaston, after taking a 0-7 record at the venue. From 0-1 down, failing to defend 371, the Shubman Gill-led side has completely outplayed England to level the 5-match Test. It has been an incredible team effort. Five batters scored at least one fifty. All five frontline bowlers got at least one wicket. Two fast bowlers claimed 5-wicket hauls as well to win by 336 runs.

India’s player rating for 2nd Test: Batters

Yashasvi Jaiswal, 8.5/10: 115 runs (87 & 28)

It was Jaiswal who set the base for India’s mammoth 587-run total in the first innings. His staying strong until the 46th over allowed Shubman Gill to settle in. Jaiswal’s shot selection in the first innings wasn’t great and he could have scored a big hundred and that’s why he doesn’t get a 10/10. In the second innings, his focus was on scoring quickly to set a big target for England and give India enough time to get them out.

KL Rahul, 6.5/10: 57 runs (2 & 55)

On a good batting track, Rahul failed to cash in. His dismissals were avoidable. Despite that, he deserves credit. Rahul scored a valuable fifty in the second innings. Just like Jaiswal set the base in the first innings, Rahul did so in the second. He didn’t bat for long with Gill but it was enough to get him going once again.

Karun Nair, 5.5/10: 57 runs (31 & 26)

Nair was the only Indian batter who got starts both times and didn’t kick on. However, it wasn’t an entire failure. One thing he did was ensure Gill, who was India’s best batter, didn’t come out early in the middle. 95/2 and 96/2 were the India captain’s entry points, and that’s because Nair stayed in the middle for long enough for the ball to soften and give Gill the best of batting conditions.

Shubman Gill, 10/10: 430 runs (269 & 161)

93.28 and 96.50 were Gill’s control percentages across his two innings. Combined, he played 32 (26 and 6) false shots in the 549 balls he faced. Even for a pitch like this, that’s absurd. Only one player has scored more runs than Gill’s 430 in a Test match in 148 years. That was his level. India’s second-best batter after him amassed 158 runs across the match; he scored more in his second innings alone. Words can’t describe what he just did at Edgbaston.

Rishabh Pant, 7/10: 90 runs (25 & 65)

Pant did Pant things at Edgbaston. He got out playing a ‘rash shot’ in the first innings and kind of left Gill stranded in the middle. He also dropped the catch of Jamie Smith when he was on 122. The missed opportunity probably cost India about 80 runs in total. But then Pant was the one who started the quick scoring in the second innings, scoring 65 from 58 balls to redeem himself.

India’s player rating for 2nd Test: All-rounders

Nitish Kumar Reddy, 2/10: 2 runs (1 & 1), 0 wickets (6 overs)

Nitish Reddy would like to forget what happened in the match. In a game where his teammates scored 1014 runs, he contributed just 2 runs. He bowled a little, 6 overs, and wasn’t too shabby. A catch was also dropped off his bowling. But that’s about it.

Ravindra Jadeja, 10/10: 158 runs (89 & 69*), 1 wicket ( overs)

Jadeja, along with Gill, took India from 211/5 to 414/6. There was no way India would have made 587 and taken a 180-run lead in the first innings. He got just 1 wicket but bowled exceptionally in the second innings. A catch was also dropped off his bowling by KL Rahul. He scored an unbeaten 69 while setting England a 608-run target as well.

Washington Sundar, 8/10: 54 runs (42 & 12*), 1 wicket (20 overs)

If Jadeja saved the game, Sundar, along with Gill, killed it for England. His partnership with the Indian captain took the score well past 500. From there, the visitors had the upper hand. He didn’t bowl badly in the first innings but was lethal in the second innings. His wicket of Ben Stokes before lunch meant that India had to just clean the tail in the remaining two sessions.

India’s player rating for 2nd Test: Fast bowlers

Akash Deep, 10/10: 10 wickets (88/4 & 99/6)

Who would have thought that Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement would actually perform like this? A 10-wicket haul from the pacer who didn’t even play in Headingley. In the first innings, Akash Deep claimed 3 of England’s top 5 batters. In the second innings, he got 4 of the top 5. A masterful performance. Akash got 8 wickets with the new ball; the other pacers combined got 7. He didn’t just break the game open; he won it for India and even got the last wicket of the match.

Mohammed Siraj, 9/10: 7 wickets (70/6 & 57/1)

As the interim leader of India’s pace attack, Siraj took over the responsibility that Bumrah had shouldered with ease. He took a 6-fer in the first innings, including sending the last three players out for a duck. It was Siraj who started things in the second innings, with Zak Crawley’s wicket, and from there, India didn’t stop.

Prasidh Krishna, 5/10: 1 wicket (72/0 & 39/1)

Prasidh bowled even better than Siraj in the second innings but the issue was his woes in the first innings. He neither kept it tight nor got any wickets. But he was able to put pressure on Bazballers on Days 4 and 5, aiding Akash Deep.
