We are ending the weekend with plenty of sunshine and warmth. High temperatures are anticipated to reach 94 degrees Sunday with the heat index pushing 100 degrees. A Heat Advisory has been issued and is in place until 8 p.m. Sunday. Dew points will stay in the mid-60s even throughout the evening, leaving a muggy feel and warm overnight temperatures in the mid-70s. Near-surface smoke is lingering overhead through Sunday and Monday. However, this smoke will stay relatively thin and will only cause negligible impacts to air quality. AQI is expected to stay on the low-end of moderate for Sunday and return to healthy on Monday. Sensitive individuals should be cautious Sunday with the combination of high heat index and moderate air quality.Monday starts off very warm with temperatures in the mid-80s by 9 a.m.. Ahead of a cold front, surface temperatures are expected to max out around 90 degrees. This heat along with the forcing from this cold front will favor the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms. We can expect these to occur between noon and 5 p.m. These storms will have the needed boost from the surface cold front to become strong. However, the atmosphere will be lacking deep wind shear needed to organize these storms into damaging supercells (rotating thunderstorms). The Storm Prediction Center has placed us in a Marginal Risk area specifically for wind and heavy rain potential. Winds at the mid-level of the atmosphere will slightly enhance surface winds. Additionally, high precipitable water values indicate the atmosphere is primed for some localized heavy downpours with these storms. With heavy downpours can also come gusty winds. This is because evaporated moisture creates a cool, denser environment that favors fast, sinking motion and, consequentially, wind gusts.
As of right now, we are staying green on the Threat Tracker for Monday due to the limiting factors in place that are working against severe weather, such as storm organization. However, a third day of heat and the potential for gusty winds and heavy downpours on Monday is something that will be monitored over the next 24 hours.
