ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A company that aims to become a global leader in precision optics has completed the nearly $19 million expansion of its facility on University Avenue in Rochester.
QED Technologies International has added around 20,000 square feet to its facility and built a new research and development center. The goal is to support breakthroughs in precision optics for the semiconductor, aerospace, and defense industries.
Company leaders say the expansion will create up to 72 jobs over the next five years. Empire State Development, the state’s economic development agency, is providing up to $1.5 million for the project through tax credits. Monroe County, the City of Rochester, and the economic development agency Greater Rochester Enterprise are also offering financial support.
The state’s investment in the project is part of Finger Lakes Forward, a plan to support photonics, agriculture, food production, and advanced manufacturing in the nine-county region.
Other investments in the Rochester area
Monroe Community College recently got $850,000 in federal funding to expand workforce training for optics and advanced manufacturing. The funding will help to create a precision optics lab at MCC’s Advanced Technology Education Center.
In addition, a new federal program aims to make Rochester and the Finger Lakes region a nationally renowned hub for innovation in laser technology. The National Science Foundation will award $15 million over the next two years to launch STELLAR Engine, a program led by the University of Rochester to create the laser technology hub. More than 90 organizations will collaborate on STELLAR, including businesses, colleges, startups, state and local governments, venture capital groups, and nonprofits.
