A sublime century from Shubman Gill and vital contributions from the rest ensured India set a gigantic 608 target for England in the IND vs ENG 2nd Test. Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul all scored half-centuries in yet another field day for England. Later in the day, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep struck to leave the hosts reeling at 72/3 at Stumps.
The day was throughly dominated by India from start to finish, with a very late declaration on Day 4. The visitors batted late into the day, despite Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja both reaching their respective milestones. There was no urgency, as displayed by Pant, earlier, prompting the Edgbaston crowd to boo the Indian batters.
Shubman Gill on the path to greatness
Shubman became the first to score a double century and a 150 in the same Test. His aggregate of 430 is the second most ever in a Test match, only behind Graham Gooch. He joined Virat Kohli as the only captain to score 3 centuries in their first two Tests as captain. The 25-year-old has gone about breaking records at regular ease in the India vs England series. He has 585 runs this series, and could eye Sunil Gavaskar record of 774 runs in a series.
Ravindra Jadeja and not reading the room
Ravindra Jadeja scored twin half-centuries in an away Test for the first time in his career. But his efforts could cost India a chance to win the 2nd test. Jadeja walked in with India needing quick runs to allow their bowlers more time to bowl out England.
However, the left-hander opted for quite the opposite. He buckled down, blocking Joe Root and Shoaib Bashir for maidens. He scored only 12 off his first 41 balls. Post Tea, he picked up a little pace, only to reach fifty in 94 deliveries. He had the lowest strike rate among all the half-centuries in the 2nd innings, and even led the Edgbaston crowd calling the play boring.

— England's Barmy Army (@TheBarmyArmy) July 5, 2025Cricket gives Karun Nair his chance, but he fails to grab it
Karun Nair’s return to the Test team has not gone as per plan. The 33-year-old hrew yet another opportunity out of the window, making only 26. In the two Tests, Karun’s scores read: 0, 20, 31, 26. He looked nervy in the second innings despite India having a sizeable lead in their kitty. India persisted with Nair despite his failures in Headingley. Should the Birmingham Test not be a win, he could find himself on the sidelines again.
