Formal charges have been filed after a 38-year-old man allegedly stole a vehicle with a 7-month-old infant inside.
According to Chicago police, Chicago resident Jeremy Ochoa was arrested by members of the Vehicular Hijacking Task Force on Thursday morning in the 6100 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Police say a 36-year-old woman was standing near her vehicle at a gas station in the 1200 block of South Independence at approximately 10:40 a.m. Thursday when Ochoa allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off. The infant girl was in the backseat of the vehicle at the time of the carjacking, police said.
Officers located the vehicle approximately 12 miles away and took Ochoa into custody. On Friday he was officially charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and aggravated kidnapping. He will face a detention hearing on Saturday, police said.
The girl was found in good condition and was taken to an area hospital for observation.
