I only believe in Miyan! Siraj steps up in Bumrah’s absence, takes 6-wicket haul at Edgbaston ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

“I only believe in Jassi bhai.” Mohammed Siraj uttered these famous words after Jasprit Bumrah changed the outcome of the 2024 T20 World Cup Final with his magic. Since coming onto the scene, Siraj has been taken under the wing by Bumrah. Although the former is just a year younger, as far as bowling goes, Bumrah is senior by quite some distance.

Worry about Bumrah’s absence

The issue for Siraj was that, despite being under Bumrah’s tutelage, he hadn’t stepped up. He was expected to take over from Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma, but he just wasn’t able to. The weird bit is that Siraj averages more when playing with Bumrah (34) in Test cricket than without him (26).

Perhaps Siraj gets complacent when Bumrah is there and leaves all too much for the leader of the pace attack to do. When it was announced that the former Indian captain wouldn’t play at Edgbaston, everyone was worried. Who will take the wickets? Because no one was thinking that Siraj might be better off with Bumrah.

Siraj becomes the leader of the attack

Siraj really said, leave taking the wickets to me. On a placid surface where England put on a 303-run stand, the pacer claimed a magnificent 6-wicket haul. England were 387/5 and the trail was 200 runs. From there, Siraj caused an unreal collapse. England scored just 20 more runs and lost their remaining 5 wickets. Four of these were taken by Siraj.

Cleaning the tail up was something India struggled with even in Headingley, but here Siraj did the job for them. But even more important were the wickets of Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes. To have England at 84/5 was the tough bit and along with Akash Deep, Siraj was able to do that.

It would have been tough to imagine that India would manage to gain a 180-run lead without Bumrah. But they have. Akash Deep deserves credit but it might be Siraj who should get the majority of the praise. He has been criticised the most and deserves the plaudits now. Maybe Prasidh Krishna needs to say, “I only believe in Miyan.”

That's two in twoooooo…. #MohammedSiraj is on fire at the moment as he dismisses the English skipper, #BenStokes for a GOLDEN DUCK! ??? ??????? ????, ???????? ???? ??? #ENGvIND 2nd TEST, Day 3 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar … pic.twitter.com/lG7FoBArNx
