Update on Ukiah construction work: Paving, Rail Trail ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

One of the most-used streets in Ukiah has a brand-new surface and the final segment of the Great Redwood Trail is underway, Public Works Director Tim Eriksen told the Ukiah City Council during his construction update this week.

“Gobbi Street is paved, so that is probably the biggest news in this entire report,” Public Works Director Tim Eriksen told the council July 2 during his latest update on the city’s many ongoing construction projects. “It started out a little rough, but it ended up being a very good project, and we finished last Friday night. I’ll have you know that our inspector walked 40 miles that week, so that was pretty amazing.”

After the paving was done, crews were working on the “raised crosswalk at the Rail Trail, they’ve already poured most of it,” Eriksen said, explaining that “the street will be open, they’ll move the cars from the outside of the raised crosswalk to the inside of the raised crosswalk.”

Later in a press release, city officials added that the crosswalk work is expected to be completed by July 9, then “construction crews will raise the irons, and striping is scheduled for July 21. Traffic Signals will be taken off of flash after the streets have been striped.”

Once the work on Gobbi is completed, Eriksen told the council that “big things are going to happen on Main Street, (as) we’re basically tearing out the entire section of Main Street from Gobbi all the way up to Norton, which is going to take about three weeks, so that’s basically going to be all of July.”

However, city officials noted that there will be “no work on the Fourth of July holiday.”

After crews pave Main Street, Eriksen said, they will move on to Perkins Street, describing the paving on Gobbi as “quite the test, and our next big test is going to be working on Perkins (Street) and Orchard (Avenue), which has a lot of utilities in that intersection and that’s going to be difficult, and we’re getting prices to possibly do that at night, because we’re so concerned about the traffic in that area.”

As for Phase 4 of the Rail Trail on the south side of town, Eriksen said “most of the structural section of the actual trail has been excavated, (and that crews were) working on a lot of the concrete areas where we have stairways down to Airport Park Boulevard, and there are a couple of different walls that go over waterways that they are pouring right now.”

Eriksen described that project as moving forward “very quickly (because) we told them we had to be done by October” to qualify for the grant funding, but the city recently received a requested extension, meaning the project “doesn’t really have to be done until March now, but they’re at a good pace, so we’re just leaving them at it.”
