The Artis Restaurant and Lounge in Chicago said a deadly mass shooting that left at least 18 people shot outside the venue “shook us deeply.”
In a statement released on social media hours after the harrowing scene unfolded during an album release party, the restaurant and lounge said its “hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones.”
The shooting took place about 11 p.m. as a crowd of people stood outside the Artis Lounge in the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue, Chicago police said. Sources told NBC Chicago people were attending a release party for Rapper Mello Buckzz.
At least four people were killed and 14 others wounded in the tragedy.
“Artis was created as a safe space. A space where Black, Queer, and allied communities could gather, be celebrated, and feel at home in River North,” the statement read. “We’ve always led with that mission. And what happened last night disrupted it in the most painful way.”

According to police, a dark-colored vehicle drove by the crowd, with several people inside the car opening fire. The vehicle then immediately fled the scene.
Artis said it will continue working with authorities to “ensure the continued safety of our community.”
“This moment is painful – but it only strengthens our commitment to holding space for those who need it most,” the venue said.
By 11:30 a.m. Thursday, signs were seen posted on Artis’ door saying the business was “closed by the order of the superintendent of police.”
At 12 p.m. Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson along with the Chicago Police Department and other city officials will hold a previously scheduled press conference detailing Chicago’s July 4th weekend safety plans. The press conference will be streamed live in the video player about once it begins.
What we know about the victims
Multiple people in their 20s and 30s were struck by gunfire, according to officials. All of them were transported to nearby hospitals.
Four people succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead, police said, including a 24-year-old man who was shot in the chest, and a 25-year-old man who was shot in the head. Two adult women, ages 26 and 27, who sustained gunshot wounds to the chest, also died, police said.
Sources told NBC Chicago the boyfriend and best friend of rapper Mello Buckzz were among those who died.
Three others were last listed in critical condition, police said, including a 21-year-old woman who was shot in the mouth; a 24-year-old woman who was shot in the leg; and a 24-year-old woman who was shot in the back.
Two were listed in fair and serious condition: a 32-year-old woman who was shot in the thigh, and a 31-year-old woman who was shot multiple times throughout her body.
Eight of those shot were last listed in good condition, including a 29-year-old woman who was shot in the shin; a 29-year-old man who was shot in the thigh; a 31-year-old woman who was shot in the knee; a 25-year-old man who was shot in the hand and thigh; a 25-year-old woman who was shot in the thigh; a 30-year-old woman shot in the hand; a 29-year-old man who was shot in the forearm; and a 27-year-old woman who was shot in the foot.
Outside hospitals where victims were being treated, emotional family and friends could be seen waiting.
No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
Hush Chicago, the former nightclub in Artis’ current location at 311 W. Chicago Ave. was shut down in 2022 after a shooting, with the Chicago Police Department deeming the club a “public safety threat.“
